A Quick Look at the Main Components of a Car Engine

A Quick Look at the Main Components of a Car EngineAutomotive engines are very complex and are made up of many moving parts that have to work in unison to keep the vehicle chugging along smoothly and safely. When you first notice a sign of engine trouble, you'll want to get to the shop for diagnostics. This will give you the best chance to avoid major engine problems. At Comfort Auto & Body Repair, our local mechanics provide expert engine diagnostics and repair in the greater Portland, OR area. Here's a brief overview of some of the main parts in an automobile engine.

The Block

The block is the engine's central structure. This is where cylinders are found and where combustion takes place.

Pistons

To properly compress air and fuel, you need your pistons to be pumping like they're supposed to. Subsequently, the force is directed to the crankshaft and ultimately goes on to get your wheels moving. Worn piston rings can lead to a substantial loss of power, as well as excessive oil consumption.

Cylinder Head

Cylinder heads are located at the top of engine blocks and do the important task of sealing in gasses. Spark plugs and valves are fitted to cylinder heads. Valves regulate fuel, air, and exhaust fumes.

Camshaft

A healthy camshaft helps to ensure that valves open and close in a way that is properly timed with other parts.

Crankshaft

By converting linear energy into rotational energy, your crankshaft helps to set your wheels in motion.

Oil Pan

Your oil pan helps to keep oil contained within the lubrication system. The oil pan gasket seals the oil pan to the engine block. Leaks at this gasket should be addressed ASAP. It's very important that oil leaks are promptly addressed so you don't risk engine failure and/or a fire hazard.
