What problems cause the check engine light to turn on?
When your check engine light comes on, it doesn't necessarily mean that your engine is on the verge of failing. But you'll still want to soon get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that the issue can be identified and addressed before it gets worse. Here are seven common reasons that the check engine light turns on.
Faulty Catalytic Converter
To ensure that carbon monoxide is turned into a less polluting emission, you need a healthy catalytic converter. Common signs of catalytic converter trouble are inconsistent acceleration and exhaust smoke that is darker than usual.
Bad Oxygen Sensor
Oxygen sensors keep track of the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust system. An oxygen sensor issue can lead to catalytic converter problems.
Failing Mass Air Flow Sensor
MAF sensors oversee how much air is coming in and determine how much fuel needs to be injected with it. One symptom of MAF trouble is that your engine stalls out soon after you start it up.
Faulty Ignition Coil
Ignition coils play an important role in generating the spark necessary for your engine to fire up. Indications of an ignition coil problem are power loss and misfiring.
Loose or Missing Gas Cap
While it may seem strange, your check engine light might illuminate if your gas cap isn't on tightly. A loose gas cap can also allow fuel to evaporate before you get the chance to use it.
Bad Spark Plugs
As old plugs repeatedly misfire, performance and fuel-efficiency can worsen. Cars that were built after the year 2000 usually don't need new plugs until 100,000 miles. Older vehicles tend to need plug replacement more often.
Faulty Battery/Charging System
As a battery fails, it can cause low voltage at the computer. Consequently, the check engine light could be triggered.
